Dermal Fillers: What You Need to Know

22 February 2026

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels - most commonly based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in your skin - used to restore volume, smooth deep lines, and enhance facial contours. Unlike anti-wrinkle treatments that relax muscles, fillers physically add volume beneath the skin's surface.

Common Treatment Areas

  • Cheeks and midface: Restoring volume lost through ageing
  • Lips: Enhancing volume, shape, and symmetry
  • Jawline and chin: Improving definition and profile
  • Nasolabial folds: Softening nose-to-mouth lines
  • Tear troughs: Reducing the appearance of under-eye hollows

What Does Recovery Look Like?

Swelling and bruising are the most common side effects and are completely normal. Lips tend to swell more than other areas - sometimes significantly for the first 48 to 72 hours. Most swelling settles within a week, with final results visible at around 4 weeks.

How Long Do Fillers Last?

Depending on the product used and the treatment area, results typically last between 6 and 18 months. Areas with more movement (like the lips) tend to metabolise filler faster than areas with less movement (like the cheeks).

Safety Considerations

Filler treatments should always be performed by a qualified, experienced practitioner who understands facial anatomy. Complications, while rare, can be serious - which is why choosing your injector carefully is one of the most important decisions you'll make.

Dermal fillers are prescription medicines. Individual results may vary. A thorough consultation is required prior to treatment. All treatments are performed in accordance with AHPRA guidelines.
